Dealing With Patronizing Behaviors

October 29, 2010

Being patronized is to be treated arrogantly that is masked with a wrong sense of kindness thus it can be frustrating to be patronized by other people and this can be one of the worst experiences that you will be able to feel in your entire life.

People from all walks of life can be patronized and that they can be patronized in different ways like:

* Addressing someone improperly like using their first name when other people address them formally

* Giving a pat on the head to a person with rank or to a disabled

* Praising someone excessively for a simple task completed

* Assigning corrective tasks to other people

* Speaking too slow or too loud when talking to an old person

* Simplifying your thoughts when talking when other people are capable of understanding difficult words

In fact, day to day objects can also patronize people too. In fact, the survey conducted by an ad agency called Saatchi & Saatchi has revealed that women felt patronized by the dominance of pink-colored products like iPods, computers and mobile phones in the market which creates stereotyping among women.

However, patronization can also lead to other concerns such as the low self-esteem thus having a negative impact especially when it comes to your work performance.

On one study published by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology noted that most male bosses have inclination to patronize their female employees thus resulting to poor work performance by women employees. Bosses offer a lot of praises to their employees without even offering any incentives like raise or even promotion to their employees.

Moreover, according to Theresa Vescio from the Penn State University who led the published work, noted that this behavior by male bosses has resulted to the creation of the concept of gender inequality in the work place.

Why Patronization Happens And What You Can Do About It

People have a tendency to patronize other people due to their own downfalls. As Hale Dwoskin noted from the Sedona Training Associates, people need to pull other people down so that they can feel good about themselves. Their insecurities and self doubt has led them to patronize other people.
